Art-Making & Community at SoNo Arts Fest

SoNo Arts Fest Tent a Success

Nothing heals a broken heart like community. We met on a Wednesday night to talk about the grief we all collectively felt now that ROE is overturned and our rights, as women, changed so abruptly, in what seems like a blink-of-an-eye. By Sunday, we were organized under an old camping shelter at the SoNo Arts Festival to spread the word that we planned to demand better. We want safe, legal abortions in America - and our demand starts NOW!

It was an Arts Festival, so art-making made sense as our first collective action. It's healing. It's personal. It's communicative. We thought we'd ask festivalgoers, "Do you want to make some art for Abortion Rights?". We quickly learned that we didn't have to ask. At one point, a six-person-deep line of people waited to hand our volunteer, Barb, a sticky note to tack to our poster boards. The notes were an outpouring of discontent - and there are hundreds. We felt the love, support, and spirit. It was heartening, and it tells us we must push on.

This weekend, we rolled out the art scroll to see all that was completed in those few hours on Sunday at the festival. We were in awe. The paper scroll filled the entire community room - parts were folded under just to fit flat against the floor molding. It was a lot. The messages were raw, funny, sweet, and some, heart-wrenching. But people wanted to use their voice, and they needed to be heard. Overturning ROE has had a devastating impact, for sure. But, it's also joined us in community. We're just getting started.

Join us in our fight. We're a volunteer action collective organized to serve our pro-abortion, pro-women's rights community leaders. We're Norwalk Actions for Reproductive Justice (NARJ) - and we need you. Until next time!
